‘I THOUGHT YOU SAID that one baby at a time was enough?’

Kate gave Sean a rueful look and they both looked at the two perfect and identical babies sharing the same hospital cot.

Their daughters had been born within ten minutes of one another earlier in the day, and after bringing Oliver to see his new sisters Sean had taken him home and put him in the care of Mrs Hargreaves before returning to the hospital to be with Kate.

‘I thought you said it was impossible for this to happen!’ Kate responded, and then felt her eyes moisten with ridiculous emotional tears as she saw the male pride in Sean’s eyes battling with the awareness that Kate had done the hard work of carrying and giving birth to them.

From the moment they had known Kate’s pregnancy was twins Sean had worried anxiously over her, but now...

Gently Sean reached for her hand and carried it to his lips. ‘Without you this wouldn’t have been possible,’ he told her emotionally. ‘You could have fallen in love and had your children with another man, Kate. But somehow I know that my problem would have made it impossible for me to father children with anyone but you.’

Of course she ought to tell him that he was being silly, but she wasn’t going to, Kate decided. No, what she was going to do was to cherish this moment for the rest of her life.

‘I see Rusty has managed to send one of his unique paw-print cards,’ she murmured teasingly. ‘Three paw-prints, too, and two of them pink!’

Sean laughed. ‘I’ve got a confession to make,’ he warned her. ‘The creation of that card involved the destruction of several items of clothing and Annie Hargreaves threatening to leave! But Oliver was insistent! Fortunately the lure of the twins was enough to make her change her mind!’

The babies were waking up and would soon be demanding a feed, Kate knew. But there was still time for her to lean forward and show their father how much she loved him, and she placed her lips to his.
